How to address eye strain caused by your screen

How to prevent screen-eye fatigue

You’ve been staring at a screen most of the day. Your eyes hurt. Your head hurts. You may even feel a bit nauseous. Looking at any device feels like a physical attack. But, your job or side-hustle involves a lot of digital screen time. What can you do to continue working?

Turn Down the Brightness

Don’t have the screen’s brightness on max. Half works for me. Don’t turn it down too far, though. Trying to read on a dark screen makes your head hurt.

“Change the brightness of the screen. It shouldn’t be lighter or darker than your surroundings.” (WebMD)

Look at Something Else

For a few seconds, just look away from the computer. Ideally, it should be something that’s a bit farther away from your workspace. Maybe look out the window.

“You should shift your focus to something other than the activity every 20 minutes. What you focus on should be 20 feet away, and you should look at it for at least 20 seconds. This is known as the 20-20-20 rule.” (HealthLine)

Sit in Silence

I’m often listening to music or a podcast while working. After a couple of hours, I’ll get sick of it and turn it off. Silence does wonders. Don’t know what it is but noise sometimes makes my headache worse. I feel so much better when I turn it off.

Walk Around The Block

Go outside and take a walk around the block. Don’t look at any device while you’re doing it.

Adjust Colors

If you can, change the theme on your device. White/Light text on a black/dark background makes your eyes tired faster.
